Pregnancy Week 28

A big change has been occured during this week.

Dietitian Visit

I met a dietitian due to 2 failures of Glucose tests. As a result, officially I’m considered as a gestational diabetes. Every nurse, doctors, and even a dietitian wondered how I got it. LOL

During the visit, firstly, a dietitian asked me my eating behavior, lifestyle such as the amount of exercise or wake-up/bedtime hours and family medical history. She told me that she doesn’t consider my diabetes as a severe case but can be easily controlled by food and exercise. Then, it followed by a 45min of lecture on what to eat, how much is 15g of carbs for each food etc. and how to measure my own blood sugar level.

I thought I must cut carbs or I’m eating too much carbs. It turned out it’s NOT. You still need to eat carbs for sure.

She calculated based on my weight gain, pre-pregnancy BMI etc. and spread out the amount of carbs that I have to follow throughout a day. It’s actually not bad. I can still eat rice. It is just a limited amount. Although, it is recommended to switch over to brown rice from white rice, or even mixing/substituting with quinoa.

Carb Controlled Diet

Here’s the amount of carbs and time I’m assigned to follow:

  • 30g carbs in breakfast @ 6:30am
  • 30g carbs in morning snack @ 9:30am
  • 45g carbs in lunch @ 12:30pm
  • 30g carbs in afternoon snack @ 3:30pm
  • 45g carbs in dinner @ 6:30pm
  • 30g carbs in bedtime snack @ 9:30pm

And what’s tough? SNACKS!!!! I’m not a snacker. So I asked her what if I’m not hungry for snack. She said she doesn’t recommend to skip any snacks. If that’s the case, you’ll need to cut the portion of your regular meal.

Why snacking? It appears that snacks helps keep blood sugar levels stable if incorporate snacks between meals.

What a pain to measure everything, right?

It’s hard to measure and takes time how much carbs is used in each meal or snack unless it’s a pre-made food.

So, my amazing husband made this for me to make my life easier 🙂 He checked all the carbs in each ingredients and measured the amount and made breakfast burritos. Plus, he labeled each burritos with the carb amount. How SWEET ♥

Easy to calculate <3

In addition, I need to log the amount of carbs I took and my blood sugar level until the end of my pregnancy. My dietitian will check every week and tell me if anything needs to be changed.

Example Sheet from my hospital

How to measure my blood sugar level?

Here’s what I got:

  • Device
  • Needle
  • Test strip

Now I have to check my blood sugar level 4 times a day.

  • Fasting (when wake up)
  • 1 hour after breakfast
  • 1 hour after lunch
  • 1 hour after dinner

Procedure is pretty simple.

  1. Wash and dry your hand well.
  2. Insert a test strip into your device.
  3. Prick the side of your fingertip with the needle provided with your test kit.
  4. Touch and hold the edge of the test strip to the drop of your blood.
  5. The device will display your blood sugar level so record the number in the sheet.

It’s a weekly report that I have to send it to my dietitian every Sunday night.

Oh and keep that in mind. DO NOT THROW NEEDLES IN THE TRASHCAN.

At least if our city finds out, we’ll get fined. So, it’s good to have a biohazard container.

We got this on Amazon.
