Geology lovers will be so interested in hiking this area. I was hooked when I just hear about glacier. Never thought about an ice age in Illinois.
Glacial Park is located in Northern Illinois, almost at Illinois-Wisconsin border. It’s about an hour and half from Downtown Chicago. We are in McHenry County now.
The trail is about 2 miles long and covers hilly and rough terrain.
The park has a visitor center, but as we had a dog, we just hesitated to go inside the building.
We just picked up their Glacial Park Interpretive Trail: Geology pamphlet but what a dummy. I didn’t pay attention until we’ve got to home… This pamphlet explains geological information/ fun facts at each spot on the trail for the visitors to stop by and enjoy the history.
If you are planning, I highly recommend to take the pamphlet before you start hiking.
Anyway, we started walking from wiedrich barn parking area and headed to the visitor center first.
Paths are nicely covered by grass so it was easy to walk. Though, not hard to imagine Orbit had to sniff around every single steps lol
Within 5min of walk we could see a nice view on the left side of the path.
As we were planning to take a short hike today, we decided to walk around Marsh Loop Trail (1.1 miles). And again, if I knew their fun facts on the pamphlet, I would’ve chose the longer route. lol
Sounds like the Marsh was created from a chunks of ice left behind.
Short walk yet my dog enjoyed an hour walk being outside and so did I :p
